Antonio F. Viveiros, father of Father Joseph Viveiros

FALL RIVER, Mass. — Antonio Ferreira Viveiros, 94, husband of Mary (Pacheco) Viveiros and father of Father Joseph Viveiros, pastor of St. Dominic Parish in Swansea, died May 2, 2009.

Mr. and Mrs. Viveiros would have celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary on July 1.

Born in Sao Antonio alem Capelas, St. Michael, Azores, the son of the late Abel F. Viveiros and Cecilia A. (Sousa) Viveiros, he came to this country in 1949.

Before retirement he was employed at Charlton Memorial Hospital and prior to that at Pearl Laundry in Fall River.

Mr. Viveiros was an active member and longtime parish sexton of the former St. Elizabeth Parish. He was a member and past president of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, the Holy Name Society and the Holy Ghost Society. He was a recipient of the Marian Medal of the Fall River Diocese.

Besides his wife and priest son, he leaves four other sons, Augustine Viveiros of Westport, John Viveiros of Somerset, Antonio F. Medeiros Jr. of Fall River, and Edward F. Medeiros of North Dartmouth; five daughters, Philomena Barboza of Tiverton, R.I., Marie Olivia Silva of Fall River, Cecilia M. Carney of Westport, Anne Marie Rider of Marlboro, and Elaine Durfee of Somerset; 22 grandchildren; 11great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. 

He was also the father of the late Antonio P. Viveiros; and the brother of the late Maria Olivia, Ambrosina Santos, Laura Reis, Maria G. Chaves, Jose M. Viveiros, Nicolau Viveiros, and Father Joao Paulo.

His Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated May 6 in St. Dominic’s Church in Swansea. Interment was in Notre Dame Cemetery, Fall River.

The Oliveira Funeral Home in Fall River was in charge of arrangements.
